Freedom for Comrade Dr. Omar Emil Awad and all political detainees in Jordan!

Solidarity Statement

The International Peoples’ Assembly expresses its strong condemnation and deep denunciation of the arbitrary arrest of Comrade Dr. Omar Emil Awad, a member of the Political Bureau of the Jordanian Communist Party. He was detained on the evening of Sunday, March 8, 2026, when Jordanian security forces forcibly took him from in front of his workplace at the Royal Hospital in Amman.

These arrests are not directed at specific individuals, but rather constitute a message of intimidation aimed at anyone who dares to openly express solidarity with the Palestinian people in the face of the ongoing Zionist-imperialist aggression against Gaza and all of Palestine.

These arrests represent a clear violation of the international conventions and treaties to which the Jordanian state is committed, guaranteeing the right to political organization, freedom of opinion and expression, and the protection of human rights.

Accordingly, we:

  • Consider that the arrest of leaders of the Jordanian Communist Party is nothing but an attempt to silence national voices rejecting normalization and complicity, and calling for the rights of peoples to freedom and dignity.
  • We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Dr. Omar Emil Awad, and that the party and families be immediately informed of the whereabouts of the detainees and the reasons for their detention.
  • We demand an end to restrictions on political, trade union, and human rights activities in Jordan and we call for respect for public freedoms and constitutional rights, and the release of all political detainees.

The voice of truth will not be silenced, and that the struggle of peoples for freedom and dignity will not be halted by any bars.

Freedom for political detainees
