Julian Assange must be free!
For more than ten years, journalist and Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has faced relentless persecution because he dared to reveal the crimes committed by the United States and its allies. His work with Wikileaks revealed the terrible abuses of imperialist countries that carry out espionage and human rights violations and impose terror, and destruction to pursue their interests.
As the International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA) we are alert and fighting for Assange’s freedom, in defense of the truth and against imperialism. The persecution and imprisonment of Assange not only seek to silence his work, but to attack genuine journalism and all those who raise their voices to spread the truth about the violence and attempts of domination of the imperialist countries.
Today, Assange is in a cell in the high-security Belmarsh Prison in London, where he was taken on April 11, 2019, while the US attempts to secure his extradition. The US has charged him, a journalist and publisher, with 18 counts under the US Espionage Act for publishing and circulating classified material regarding US war crimes in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere which together carry a total maximum prison sentence of 175 years.
Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, classified the treatment of Julian as psychological torture and collective persecution.
From the political organizations, trade unions, parties and peoples’ movements which are a part of the IPA, we join people across the world to oppose the request for extradition and demand the immediate and unconditional release of Julian Assange.
No more hiding the truth about the crimes of US imperialism and its allies.
No to extradition!
