For a Peaceful, Sovereign, and Democratic Syria
The devastating sectarian massacres on Syria’s coast which took place last week have shocked the world, demonstrating the urgent need for a peaceful, sovereign, and democratic Syria, free from foreign meddling and occupation.
After the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham – HTS, and allied jihadist factions, supported by foreign powers like Turkey and USA, have tried to impose centralized control over Syria—but their efforts remain far from complete. The nation remains fractured, with militias controlling swaths of territory, and foreign powers asserting influence over key regions. Once again, western intervention, provocation, and war-mongering have plunged Syria into prolonged insecurity and violence, echoing the destructive patterns seen in Libya and Iraq. Meanwhile, Israel’s interests in Syria further complicate the situation, with its Zionist agenda aiming to control large parts of the country, intensify sectarian division and destabilize any form of central government that could pose a threat to its dominance.
The fall of Assad has failed to result in a process of unification of Syria, as the HTS pursues this project by way of eliminating minority groups and opposition forces. Sectarian declarations by the HTS militias and the assault on the Alawite population have resulted in protests and uprisings in Alawite strongholds where both civilians and former regime soldiers have begun to resist. In response, the government has launched brutal offensives, resulting in devastating civilian casualties. This ongoing crisis has ignited fierce debates among progressive forces, who demand a popular, secular, non-sectarian government to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and protect it from jihadist influence. It is impossible to envision a stable, peaceful Syria under HTS rule if ethnic cleansing and the eradication of minority groups are seen as the path forward.
